Module Three Part III: Blog Assignment
Separate but equal means that public institutions must separate the White and the Black people, but they were both still treated equally. In my opinion, separate but equal is not a viable option in education today. I believe this because school is going to be less diverse if African Americans and White people are forced to go to separate schools. Education with little to no diversity can impact a student’s performance in class, exams, and behavior. Less diversity can lower people’s chances of having a good paying job after graduation. Moreover, schools with less diversity can ruin its reputation and will lose money due to people not attending that school. Furthermore, African Americans and White people are not going to understand how to accept diversity and celebrate differences if they attend schools that are only associated with their race. Learning to respect people’s differences is an important lesson to learn in life and going to school where you meet others that are in the same race as you really takes away that lesson. Students will never know what it's like to feel different since everybody looks the same in schools. Attending school where everybody is together and treated equally makes individuals feel involved and that they have a purpose. People will feel encouraged to stand out and understand the meaning of accepting diversity. Students will achieve high grades on exams and in their classes because they will be more confident in their abilities.
I believe that this is a course that we should pursue as a society. I believe this way because people need to understand that American education was completely different in the 1800s and 1900s. Students today have to realize that it was difficult for people to have the same access to education given how strict segregation was back in the day. In addition, students must know that the opportunities to even attend school were limited since people faced challenges to find a school that matched their child’s skin color. People need to be mindful that education is a valuable resource to them because it creates knowledge and it opens up new ideas and discoveries. American education helps people develop the most basic skills that people use in their everyday lives. People must consider themselves fortunate to come into school every day so that they have the chance to apply for high-paying jobs. Taking a course such as The History of American Education reminds people that they should never take their education for granted. Students should appreciate the lessons they are receiving and the skills they are learning because it will always have a huge payoff. American Education is worth pursuing because it teaches them on discrimination and racism, which are important lessons to acquire. American education tells everyone that they should treat each other with respect and celebrate each other’s background. Education plays an important part of our society and so it is crucial for people to become aware of how far American education has come and the changes that were involved in American education. In conclusion, society should pursue this course.
