Blog Assignment #2
Public education unifies the United States in many ways. Education builds people’s knowledge about the world around them in regards to science, history, math, and English. Public education promotes equity for all schools. Promoting equity became the main goal in education since it encouraged people from different backgrounds to pursue the same level of education. The federal government play a huge role in promoting equity when the government passed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, and the Individuals with Disabilities Act. The new laws that were created ensured that children who come from low-income and minority families obtain the same educational opportunity as everyone else. Federal and state programs allowed schools to provide school lunch and breakfast to children from low-income families. Equity was further promoted when public schools employed school nurses and other types of social services such as before and after-school care, counseling, and substance abuse prevention. Public education is seen as a public good because people can comprehend the difference between good and bad, find better-paying jobs, and become better citizens. People are able to understand the society they live in so they are aware of laws and regulations that they must follow. Public education unifies the United States since people can use their newly acquired knowledge to discover new ideas and create good habits out of their day.
While education unifies the United States, it also divides the United States. Education is one of the main factors where immigrants face hostility. New immigrants face difficulty when enrolling in school. Families must provide multiple documents such as proof of residence, birth certificate, and vaccination records. Providing these documents is a challenge for unaccompanied immigrants. Immigrant families have trouble when registering for enrollment online due to language barriers. Immigrant students who struggle to speak English have difficulty gaining access to health care services and tutoring services. They are often bullied by their classmates due to them being so different in regards to race, ethnicity, and language spoken. Immigrant students face fear of going to school because they are concerned of the bullying that they will encounter. Education divides society in the United States because it places people in different rankings. Some students can go to private schools, while other people can go to public schools. Some people don’t have enough money to put their children in public school or private school, which puts them into rankings such as higher class or lower class.
School shaped and defined the lives of the American public. People are becoming more educated as they grow older from attending school. They are more aware of their surroundings and know basic skills such as reading and writing. School shaped people’s beliefs about themselves and the world around them. People have access to potential job opportunities from attending school daily. School shaped and defined my life because I get to interact with other people and learn new skills that apply to the real world. School helped train my mind and body so that I can be prepared for real-world situations. Coming to school daily taught me more about responsibility and ethical beliefs. School opened new doors in ways that I could never have imagined. Getting an education made me realize that there is more to this world than what I usually see at home.
